What a difference a year makes! No one can say they were prepared for the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. But in the time that has passed since the beginning of the pandemic, Team Mulberry has risen to the occasion to create an environment for residents and staff that is as safe, comfortable, and engaging as possible.

In the beginning, it meant restricting visits to the community, putting social distancing protocols in place, providing ways for residents to keep in touch with their families through video calling apps and finding creative ways to keep the community engaged. Now, with the introduction of Covid-19 vaccines, and with cases decreasing significantly from peak levels, our community is making a gradual, but certain, return to “normal.”

The biggest boost to our efforts has been the successful vaccine clinics held here in the community in the winter months. We’re thankful to the residents and staff members who made the decision to get vaccinated in order to protect one another. Currently, 87% of our residents are vaccinated. The original vaccination percentage surpassed 90%; However, given the transient nature of our rehab services, the percentage fluctuates based on short-term residents and whether they have been vaccinated prior to entering our community.

Our community’s progress against Covid-19 is strengthened by the continued social distancing measures we have in place, as well as the stringent sanitization tools and procedures. In our efforts to eradicate any trace of the virus from our community we’ve installed Halo ultraviolet sanitizing devices to all of our central HVAC systems and we’re also cleaning surfaces with a peroxide-based solution that eliminates traces of the virus within seconds of contact. We also test all staff and residents for Covid-19 weekly as a proactive measure to mitigate the risk of spread through our community.

In March, we were given the green light to re-open in a safe manner. Since then, residents have been reunited with their loved ones during family visits. They’ve also been able to sit and eat in the dining room for the first time in a year, as well as resume many of their favorite daily activities and programs — with the necessary social distancing measures in place, of course. One of the highlights of the past month has been welcoming the beloved therapy dogs back to the community! Residents love having the opportunity to interact with our furry friends. We’re looking forward to the day when we’re able to welcome back more of our partners from the local community who have entertained our residents and staff throughout the years.

None of the progress we’ve made during this time would have been possible without each and every member of our dedicated staff. At a time when most healthcare providers depend upon agency staff to fill openings, Mulberry is proud to not have needed to enlist the help of agencies to fill any openings. Every member of our team is a Mulberry employee and, as such, committed to our mission of providing care for seniors and support for their families. It’s why our staff retention rate is much higher than the industry average. Even with the light at the end of the tunnel in sight, Team Mulberry continues to go above and beyond to provide the best healthcare services, no matter the challenges that may arise. Caring is what we do best, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
